Heavy rain can quickly create dangerous conditions on roadways, and it only takes a small amount of moving water to put lives at risk. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around—don’t drive through it. Fast-moving water is often deeper and stronger than it appears, and conditions beneath the surface can be impossible to see.

During flash flooding, remember these three simple safety tips:

• Get to higher ground if flooding threatens your area.
• Never drive into standing or moving water. Turn around and find an alternate route.
• Stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts, emergency alerts, and local updates.

Even a few inches of water can be extremely dangerous. Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, 12 inches can carry away a small car, and 18 inches or more can sweep away most SUVs, vans, and trucks. Your destination is never worth the risk. By staying alert, avoiding flooded roads, and following emergency guidance, you can help protect yourself, your family, and first responders. Be prepared.
