As Bellevue prepares for its annual Memorial Day observances, community organizations are shining a spotlight on the Hero Banner Project, a tribute honoring local service members who gave their lives in service to the country.
The project, a collaborative effort between the Russell Madden Memorial Fund, The Barracks Project, In-Vue, the City of Bellevue Administration, Bellevue Police Department, and the Bellevue Veterans Club features banners displayed along Fairfield Avenue recognizing 27 fallen heroes connected to the Bellevue community.
Most banners include the service member’s photograph, branch of service and conflict in which they served, creating a powerful visual reminder of the sacrifices made by local families throughout generations of military service.
Bellevue is home to one of the oldest Memorial Day parades in Kentucky, and organizers say the Hero Banner Project helps deepen the community’s longstanding tradition of remembrance.
“These banners represent more than names and photographs,” said Bellevue Mayor Charlie Cleves. “They represent neighbors, family members and hometown heroes whose sacrifices helped protect the freedoms we enjoy today. We hope the community takes time this Memorial Day season to reflect on their service and remember the lives behind the banners.”
Organizers are also encouraging community members and relatives of the honored veterans to share stories, memories and photographs connected to the fallen heroes as part of the ongoing remembrance effort.
The Hero Banners will serve as a centerpiece leading into the 97th Annual Bellevue-Dayton Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m.
