Protect Our Waterways: Simple Steps Before the Next Rain

What happens on our streets and around our homes can have a direct impact on our local waterways. When rain falls, stormwater can carry leaves, grass clippings, litter and other debris into storm drains—and eventually into our creeks and rivers.

Before the next rain, take a few minutes to help keep our storm drains clear:

• Keep yard waste contained. Properly dispose of leaves and grass clippings and keep them off streets and sidewalks.
• Check your storm drain. Remove leaves, litter and other debris that could block water flow. If a storm drain needs additional attention, contact your city or county.
• Pick up litter. Take a few minutes to collect trash near your home or business before rain washes it into the stormwater system.

Small actions can make a big difference in protecting our waterways and helping prevent stormwater pollution.
