Winter Storm Safety Reminders
As cold weather approaches, it’s important to be prepared in case of a power outage:
Keep mobile phones charged and have flashlights, batteries, bottled water, nonperishable food, and medications on hand.
If using a generator, follow manufacturer instructions and operate it outdoors only—never inside a home or garage.
Do not use grills or outdoor appliances indoors, as they can produce dangerous carbon monoxide.
Stay away from downed or sagging power lines and treat all lines as energized. Report them immediately to Duke Energy or emergency services.
Make alternate shelter plans if needed, especially for households with elderly residents or medical needs.
If a power line falls on your vehicle, stay inside the car. If you must exit due to an immediate life-threatening emergency, jump clear with both feet together and avoid touching the vehicle and ground at the same time.
